Course Description: Diversity in the Workplace

Diversity and inclusion matters. Building a positive and inclusive culture with a high level of sensitivity and civility has been shown to result in high performance, job satisfaction, and team innovation.To remain competitive and to succeed in a global marketplace, employers and employees must understand and appreciate the significance of a diverse workplace. In this course, a video narrator explains diversity concepts and helps employees and managers recognize the complexity of the workforce today. Employees will learn procedures needed to follow and comply with the law, as well as provide a working environment that will benefit all. Participants will walk away with understanding pitfalls to be aware of when applying these techniques and indicators of success as well.


Understanding Diversity and Sensitivity in the Workplace

  • Understanding diversity (i.e. demographic statistics, definitions)
  • Importance of diversity and sensitivity in the workplace
  • Historical background of increasing diversity in the workplace (civil rights, immigration laws, women’s rights, etc.)
  • Tools such as Diversity Evaluation, Identifying Group Biases, Team Diversity, and Diversity Related Performance Plan Worksheets are included for the employee to utilize and customize
  • Benefits of diversity in the workplace (e.g., positive response, more business, negative attitudes minimized)

Understanding Illegal Discrimination and Harassment

  • Overview and examples of EEOC protected categories of discrimination
    • Sex, gender, pregnancy, national origin, citizenship, religion, disability, race, etc.
  • Forms of illegal harassment
  • Consequences of discrimination or harassment (i.e., negative impact on morale, lawsuits)
  • Examples of conduct to be avoided in a:
    • Sexually hostile environment
    • Hostile work environment (non-sexual or gender related categories)
      • Ex: telling jokes that focus on religion, race, national origin, age, disability
    • Conflict resolution
      • Effective communication, active listening, dealing with conflict in the workplace
    • Responsibilities
      • Awareness, policies, resources, and commitment to diversity at the company and individual level

  • Understanding the advantages of diversity in an organization
    • Knowing what diversity is, understanding varying views
    • Understanding how diversity and sensitivity affect business
    • Relating to diverse customers and employees
    • Understanding and expecting demographic changes
    • Understanding the relationship between technology, global economy, target marketing
  • Overcoming barriers to organization change
    • Understanding and valuing cultural differences
    • Group work and dynamics
    • Ensuring workplace inclusion
    • Avoiding stereotypes, discrimination, and prejudices
  • Promoting diversity in the organization

  • Course Objectives
    • Build an inclusive culture and being sensitive within the workplace
    • Use effective communication techniques to resolve conflict
    • Understand employee responsibility with regard to harassment and illegal discrimination

Review and Testing

  • Case scenarios of potential diversity and/or discrimination issues are presented for participant to provide feedback

Quiz requirement where participants must score 80% or higher to receive a certificate of completion
