The Diversity in the Workplace course features unconscious bias training, introduces employees to the science behind it and teaches them the skills to resolve bias in a positive way. The Science Behind Bias

Through science and research we have learned that our brains often take mental shortcuts that result in implicit or unconscious bias. The bias that results often appears in the form of microaggressions that can be very harmful. The impacts can be seen in hiring, promotion, and being excluded or disrespected at work.

Rather than placing blame or focusing on who may have advantages, the class focuses on the awareness that, as humans, all have bias. Being aware and able to self-reflect on personal biases in the workplace and how to halt subtle or more direct biases from emerging in the workplace are two important steps in resolving it. When employees use strategies that mitigate bias, microaggressions in the workplace will be reduced.

In addition to bias content, this DEI&B class covers unconscious bias, stereotypes, harassment prevention, protected classes, racial diversity, generations in the workplace, cultural sensitivity, inclusive conversations best practices, and more. Besides building a sense of belonging and a respectful culture, achieving a work environment with a high level of sensitivity, civility, and affirmation  has been shown to result in enhanced performance, job satisfaction, and team innovation.
