Concierge medicine started in 1996 in Seattle. It has gradually moved across the country and is now available in St. Louis.

Gay Franchise
Franchisors had a vehicle to take advantage of the LGBTQ+ community's growing purchasing power.
This business is no longer operational.
Gay Franchise is the only online franchise directory that targets LGBT business owners. The new portal opens doors to a brand new market for savvy franchise marketers and assists self-identified LGBT business professionals in becoming successful franchisees.
“Until now, the LGBT community has gone virtually unrepresented in the franchise industry. We are seeking to change that path by linking forward-thinking franchisors with one of the most lucrative markets in the U.S. economy today,” stated Grant Courtney, Co-Founder of Gay Franchise.
LGBTQI+ businesses will find comprehensive listings of franchisors that include a company history, training, qualifications and the company’s diversity statement. The site will also feature capital partners, attorneys and consultants to guide beginning franchisees to success.
Gay Franchise is the only service provider that connects franchise companies to the LGBTQ+ entrepreneurial and business community. Through the online and traditional directory as well as our annual Gay Franchise Expo, this multi-Media opportunity will help franchisors make a connection to this community thereby increasing brand awareness and franchise sales.
Our business is sponsored and driven by Echelon Magazine. Gay Franchise adds momentum to the increasing LGBTQ+ economy. With the purchasing power of this niche market projected at $835 billion and diverse neighborhoods sprouting up all over the country, the LGBTQ+ community is a formidable contributor to North America’s overall economic growth.
Gay Franchise offers a unique opportunity to connect us to the LGBTQI+ community and send the message that our doors are open to everyone,” stated Lawrence Friedman, President and CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning, one of Gay Franchise’s first clients.
“Now franchisors have the means to rise above the clutter and promote an inclusive work environment to all,” Co-Founder of Gay Franchise and Publisher of Echelon Magazine.

Gay Straight Alliances
GLSEN - The Gay Straight Network strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, including pronoun use.
GLSEN has changed their name to GLISTEN.
Founded as a local group in 1990 in Tennessee, the Gay and Lesbian Independent School Teachers Network (GLSTN/GLISTENTN) began as a volunteer group of 70 gay and lesbian educators. At that time, there were two Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) in the nation, only one state with policy in place to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students, and a general lack of awareness of the needs of LGBTQIA+ students within the school system, particularly public schools. LGBTQIA+ youth did not have a voice in the education community or in the movement. There were few, if any, resources available for teachers to discuss LGBT issues. However, groups of concerned individuals began to establish chapters across the country, advocating locally and regionally for safe schools for students who were, or were perceived to identify as LGBTQIA+.
Glisten is dedicated to creating safe and respectful learning environments for youth of all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, pronouns, race and abilities.
In 1995 GLSTN became a national organization and hired it first full time staff person, GLSTN’s founder and Executive Director Kevin Jennings (he/him prounouns). In 1997, GLSTN staged its first national conference in Salt Lake City, UT to respond to the legislature’s move to ban all student groups in an effort to prevent the formation of Gay Straight Alliances in the state. It is also this year that GLSTN changes its name to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, in order to attract new members to the struggle for safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/ expression. Visit our website to view GLSEN statistics.
Currently, GLSEN/Glisten has registered more than 2500 Gay Straight Alliances, has approximately 30 full time staff, a governing board of 20 members and two advisory committees at the national level. At this point GLSEN has successfully hosted 8 national conferences to bring together student leaders, educators, chapter leaders and activists. GLSEN also sponsors the National Day of Silence, which close to 2 million students, teachers, and staff have been a part of at 3029 school campuses across the country. GLSEN’s newest national project is National No Name Calling Week. In coalition with leading education organizations, including the National Education Association and the National Middle School Association, GLSEN is proud to be a part of an event geared toward educating middle school students about the negative impact of bullying and harassment. Glisten welcomes students of all identities and honors different pronouns including they/them.
Consider giving to Glisten.

Massage therapists and other healthcare workers are encouraged and sometimes required to participate in Implicit Bias training.
Which states require implicit bias training for health care workers?
As of 2025 the following states have passed legislation requiring bias training:
California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Michigan, and Washington D.C.
Why is the government requiring health care providers to receive training on bias?
It all relates to the quality of care. If providers are able to address and reduce their biases at work, patient care will improve.
More states have laws they are considering making this a requirement for all health care works, from physicians and nurses, to massage therapists, home healthcare and more. When healthcare providers are more self-aware of the biases they bring when meeting or interacting with clients or patients, they can employ effective strategies to change.
Diversity among massage therapists and other similar practitioners has lagged behind other providers. For example, massage therapists are predominantly white (over 72%) when it comes to race and identify as women gender (over 82%) according to the US Census data. Chiropractors, who may provide massage, are also predominantly white, with a majority being men (in gender). Home health aides who may perform massage are much more diverse with over 50% identifying as Latino, Black, or Brown. Industries such as massage, architecture, and even petroleum have not reached the diversity of the communities they serve. Practices that support equitable solutions are ideal.
Key Areas Lacking in Representation in Massage
- Age
- LGBTQIA+
- Gender including Non-Binary and Transgender
- Disability
- Race
- Ethnicity
- Gender Expression
- Nationality
- Weight
- Religion
So how do we attract more diverse candidates with regard to differences in race, ethnicity, and gender?
Enhancing Diverse Representation in Massage
The first step in enhancing equity and DEI in massage is to expand opportunities, access, and resources. Some initiatives underway are providing school vocational and guidance counseling to Black and Hispanic students to ensure they know this is an opportunity. Additionally, opportunities are presented at the college level, particularly as HBCU's (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). This can be in the form of posters and informational brochures and other printed collateral as well as websites and digital media.
Customers who Receive Massages
According to data from the latest Census, more and more white customers and patients are seeking massage, as opposed to Black, Brown, or Hispanic patients. This disparity likely relates to having knowledge of the benefits of massage and access to care as well as financial considerations. It may also relate to the current state of the massage therapists available with their identities being primarily white. It is a two-fold situation; patients often like to work with therapists who are similar in identity to them. If those therapists are not diverse, it can create a situation in which some patients do not feel comfortable booking appointments.
Benefits of Corporate Chair and Full Massages
There are a number of benefits to massage for people of all identities, many of which relate to health. This is why it is important for therapists to utilize inclusive practices and address bias.
Massage Benefits
- Reduces Repetitive Stress Injuries
- Improved Overall Health
- Lowers Employee Absenteeism
- Increases Performance and Productivity
- Improves Problem-Solving and Creativity
- Positive Work Environment
- Raises Engagement
- Reduced Back and Neck Pain
- Reduced Migraine Headaches
- Immediate Results: Relaxed Muscles

Some comments from Lee's TN Mortgage customers:
Hi Lee, I just want to say thank you for the wonderful partnership you provided Josh and me during the purchase of our first home. As I imagine most first time homebuyers do, we had tons of questions at all hours of the day and evening as we prepared to buy. You were patient and thorough in answering all of those many questions. You also were amazing at keeping us stay on track with providing the appropriate paperwork needed for all of the approvals and the loan processing.
One of the best parts about working with you was your ability and willingness to communicate directly with our realtors. Whether you were making sure we were looking at homes that fit our unique financial needs or double-checking the verbiage on our offers, you were there every step of the way. Your work provided a seamless, easy experience for us. Thank you for helping to make our first home purchase a great one. We look forward to working with you again in a few years! Many thanks, Erin and Josh L Nashville, TN
Murphy came to visit just when I thought I had defied all the odds and sold my condo at the height of the worst recent US housing bust since the Great Depression. Unbeknownst to me, the mortgage lender I had chosen for my new home was not only on the verge of bankruptcy and had closed its doors just weeks before my closing, but they also opted not to tell me about it in hopes they could pull off a miracle and salvage what business they had left. Once I discovered the breach in fiduciary responsibility and utter lack of integrity, I was only 6 days away from closing on my new home and had no mortgage. In a panic I frantically called an acquaintance my brother recommended, Lee Barroll at Countrywide Home Loans of Nashville.
What an amazing, poised and dedicated professional! Lee was able to get my file from the nearly defunct mortgage company, have them release the FHA number, and get a mortgage for me in time for my closing and at a competitive interest rate. Moreover, his calm and steady demeanor was very comforting during a time that was very uncertain and stressful. I appreciate the work Lee did for me. My realtor appreciates it and has chosen to send all her future business to Lee. And I recommend him and his services without reservation to anyone needing a home loan. Thanks Lee! Sincerely, Susan J. Columbia, TN *
